Review:
Pelli Kani Prasad, starring Sapthagiri in a more restrained role, is the latest comedy film to hit the big screen. Known for his energetic and often exaggerated performances, Sapthagiri takes on a more subtle character in this movie. Directed by Abhilash Reddy Gopidi, the film brings a mix of comedy, family drama, and a pinch of romance. But does it succeed in delivering laughs or falls flat? Let’s dive into the review.
Story Overview:
Katnam Prasad (Sapthagiri), a man in his late 30s working in Malaysia, remains unmarried due to his father (Murali Goud)’s unusual demand: his son can only marry if the bride brings a dowry of Rs. 2 crore. Priya (Priyanka Sharma) and her family, determined to settle in the United States, reject marriage proposals that don’t meet their aspirations. After facing numerous rejections, Priya learns about Prasad’s situation and decides to marry him, agreeing to his father’s dowry condition, but cleverly without paying a single rupee.
This leads to a shocking twist that turns Priya and her family’s plans upside down. As they face new challenges and unravel secrets, the film explores how Prasad navigates through these hurdles while trying to find a resolution to his complicated situation. Will they find a way to settle as they wish?
Plus Points:
Sapthagiri, known for his over-the-top comedic roles, offers a more subdued performance this time, which works in his favor. He manages to entertain in certain moments, especially with his expressions and reactions to awkward situations. While not as energetic as his usual performances, Sapthagiri’s timing and emotional range do contribute to some genuinely funny moments.
Priyanka Sharma does a commendable job in her role as a woman determined to make her dreams of moving to the United States come true. She brings a certain charm to her character, making her character’s aspirations relatable. Her screen presence works well in the scenes involving family drama and personal struggle.
Supporting actors such as Muralidhar Goud, Annapurna, and others try to bring humor to the film, and their performances do create occasional fun moments. They add some warmth to the family-oriented scenes, giving the movie some depth.
Minus Points:
While the premise of Pelli Kani Prasad could have led to an enjoyable comedy, the humor often feels forced and exaggerated. The comedic scenes are weighed down by overacting, turning moments that should have been funny into frustrating ones.
Characters like Priyanka, Pramodini, and Mahaboob Basha, at times, go overboard, making it hard for the audience to connect with their characters or enjoy the humor. The slapstick style doesn’t do justice to the film’s potential for heartwarming comedy. Additionally, scenes where household workers insult and hit the protagonist in the name of comedy feel misplaced and unnecessary.
The film also lacks originality. Several dialogues and sequences seem reminiscent of well-known films, but without the charm or freshness to make them stand out. While it’s not inherently wrong to take inspiration from other movies, Pelli Kani Prasad doesn’t succeed in crafting an identity of its own.
The climax is underwhelming and rushed, with overacting taking center stage, making for a disappointing and forgettable conclusion.
Technical Aspects:
Director Abhilash Reddy Gopidi misses the mark when it comes to crafting an engaging comedy. The premise had potential, but the execution falters, primarily due to weak character development and exaggerated performances. The humor, which should have been the film’s highlight, ends up being its major drawback.
Sekhar Chandra’s music is passable, neither standing out nor detracting from the story. Sujatha Siddharth’s cinematography is decent but doesn’t add much flair to elevate the film. The production values are adequate, though the editing by Chintala Madhu is smooth, failing to fix the pacing issues that hurt the overall viewing experience.
Verdict:
Overall, Pelli Kani Prasad is a lackluster comedy that fails to live up to its potential. Sapthagiri’s restrained performance is a positive, but the film struggles with forced humor, exaggerated acting, and weak storytelling. If you’re looking for fresh, well-crafted comedy, Pelli Kani Prasad may not be the best choice for your weekend entertainment.
